There are relatively few early music DVDs on the market, so this film of René Jacobs directing a 2004 performance of Buxtehude’s cycle of cantatas contemplating the sufferings of Christ is most welcome. Recorded in an abbey in the Swiss town of Payerne, it is a straightforward frills-free film of the five singers (including Maria Cristina Kiehr and Andreas Scholl) and instrumentalists singing and playing. It lasts a tranquil 53 minutes.
