This is surely one of Terfel’s best recordings so far. His first all-Mozart album, it includes his signature roles as well as débuts. For the first time we hear Terfel as the predatory and haughty Count in Figaro as well as the man-servant Figaro (a role he has sung before), and he also presents both master and servant from Don Giovanni. Another first is his Papageno from Die Zauberflöte, with two arias and two duets in which he is joined by Miah Persson, a charming Papagena and a touching Pamina. Persson has rapidly established a position as one of today’s top Mozart interpreters, and it is good to hear her in other duets too, where she takes on the roles of Susanna from Figaro and Fiordiligi from Così fan tutte. Chistine Rice makes two appearances as Dorabella, adding to the attractions of this disc. So, plenty of vintage Terfel, but plenty of other stylish Mozart singing from the ladies, and great playing from the SCO who obviously had fun under the expert guidance of Sir Charles.
