Rostropovich’s early recordings were put together in celebration of the maestro’s 80th birthday this year and now provide a fitting tribute to a very remarkable man. The set contains some rare recordings, including his recording of Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto with the Moscow All-Union Radio Symphony Orchestra and Grigory Stolyarav (rec. 1953), on CD for the first time. The second disc is made up of popular encores by Chopin, Schumann, Popper and Paganini. All the recordings date from the mid-‘50s. The sound is mostly very good; there are a couple of woolly moments but not enough to distract.
