In this Elgar anniversary year, I doubt if there could be any finer tribute than Sir Colin Davis’s new recording of the Enigma Variations. Taken from two live performances in January this year, it captures the very essence of Elgar’s music: by turn tender, stirring, light-hearted, boldly vigorous, but with an underlying poignant yearning. The orchestra gives its all, whirling and dashing through Troyte and producing playing of heart-rending beauty in Nimrod. Davis’s measured handling and the good recorded sound make this a top recommendation.
