Concerto Caledonia Late Night Sessions from the Edinburgh Festival
Guest Artists; Concerto Caledonia / McGuinness
Delphian DCD34093
Release date July 2010
Local label Delphian was on hand to record four late night sessions performed by Concerto Caledonia and guests live at the Hub during the Festival last year. The concerts presented a collection of music from Scotland through the centuries, and a year on the performances have been whittled down to just over an hour of great Scottish folk music. The disc opens with The Book of Doves, a song of histories of faiths, sung by Alasdair Roberts. Next comes the distinctive voice of Michael Marra in a hauntingly beautiful medley of tunes Marshall/Burns from Robert Burns and the fiddler William Marshall. This provides a platform for violinist David Greenberg and David McGuiness who 'particularly enjoyed testing the dynamic of Christopher Hogwood's fortepiano...' and culminates in a foot-stomping finale. Other highlights include Martin Carthy's arrangement of Sir Patrick Spens that tells the tale of the doomed journey to bring home Scottish Queen Margaret, Maid of Norway, in 1290 and Katherine Fuge singing The Secret Kiss, the second song in Oswald's 12-part song cycle Colin's Kisses. This also features Chris Norman's beautiful flute playing. There is much to enjoy on this disc that stands as a memento of four outstanding evenings of music-making.
