Prosit Neujahr! A snap poll of customers suggests that this year’s New Year’s Day concert from Vienna was most enjoyable. Mariss Jansons conducted old favourites from the Strauss dynasty plus compositions by Ziehrer, Hellmesberger and Tchaikovsky. In politically correct fashion, Lumbye’s Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop was included (a New Year’s Concert premiere) to mark Denmark’s chairmanship of the Council of the EU from 1st January 2012. The CD of the concert will be released on 16th January, and the DVD and Blu-ray versions two weeks later. Elsewhere there is a plethora of good new releases to savour, with EMI’s list particularly strong. Our January special promotion offers reductions on a wide range of Decca and DG titles, including many L’Oiseau-Lyre and Archiv recordings.
