When ordering new recordings for the shop, it can be difficult raising much enthusiasm for Christmas-themed discs - especially if they are sold in as early as August! However, this year's crop of new Christmas CDs contains some excellent and unusual offerings. Pride of place goes to Ex Cathedra's Joy in the Morning, a beautifully-compiled selection of Christmas-related songs, motets and carols. The juxtaposition of the Scottish lullaby O horo eeree with Gruber's Stille Nacht is just one of its highlights. Carols by Candlelight from Magdalen College, Oxford is a lovely mix of music for Advent and Christmas, while Gonville and Caius' reflective collection of medieval and contemporary carols will refresh palates jaded from a surfeit of the familiar. The link below gives more details of these and other Christmas discs. Meanwhile, several new classical CDs have been issued which might prove suitable stocking-fodder - look out for Alfie Boe's disc of Lehár arias on the Linn label, and on the Virgin label soprano Diana Damrau's COLORaturaS and counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky's disc of JC Bach arias, La dolce fiamma.
